As many of you may already know, author and speaker Jerry Bridges entered the glory of heaven yesterday evening. Literally millions of Christians have been affected and blessed and encouraged specifically through Bridge's writing. Make no mistake - a spiritual giant has crossed the river to the other side. We will all miss Jerry Bridges.
Our own Rich Richardson had the opportunity to interact with Jerry Bridges on a personal level 17 years ago while at the Sovereign Grace Pastor's College. He says, "I volunteered to pick up from the airport our guest lecturer for the SG Pastor’s College that week. It was Jerry Bridges. I met Mr. Bridges in person before I met him in any of his books. I found him to be kind and unassuming in person. As we drove toward his hotel he told me about his flight in, what his favorite kind of food was, what his favorite book was, his family and the like. When I met him in his books I found him to be a man who bled the gospel in all he wrote."
Chris Daukas from our partner church in Peoria had a similar experience with Mr Bridges: "Jerry was one of my professors at the Pastors College. What a privilege to study under this man. One of the highlights of my year was getting assigned to picking him up from his hotel and shuttling him to the PC. I got to ask him several questions that had me stumped for years and we had a great talk. I'm grateful to God for the impact he has made for Christ. If you've never read his books, Disciplines of Grace, Trusting God, Respectable Sins....basically anything he's written you should get and read."
One of our small groups this session is going through the book "Bookends of the Christian Life" that Jerry Bridges wrote with Bob Bevington. Bob wrote a wonderful tribute to Jerry Bridges on the Gospel Coalition website HERE.
If you'd like to read about Jerry Bridges' life (including a list of the many excellent books he wrote), Justin Taylor via The Gospel Coalition has written a biographical tribute that you can read HERE.
We are sad that Jerry Bridges' ministry here on earth has ended, but we rejoice that he is now in the presence of the great God and Christ that he loved, worshiped and honored with his life.
Thank you Jerry, for the legacy and lessons you have left behind so that we may grow in our love for Jesus and honor him with our lives as you did with yours.
